Why is it that when someone transitions to a new gender, they reinforce old gender ideas by taking a new “more appropriate” name? Shouldn’t making names gender neutral be a thing?
Did Bruce really have to become Caitlin? If a rose would smell as sweet by any other name, what does it matter? The entire world knew her as Bruce, it’s not like she’s ever going to meet anyone who didn’t know that she has a past.
In the case of a young person like my cousin who transitioned very young in life, I get it. She’s a girl, she took a girl’s name, she’s now going to live the rest of her life as a girl. No one she meets from this point on will even suspect that she wasn’t born a girl.
