The demonstrated insanity that came from the opponents of the Iran deal didn’t die when it was passed. It continues now even after its fruits have been borne out in the dismantling of reactors and surrender of fissile materials. Of course, those are news items that aren’t going to get front pages, so easy to be ignorant of. But to keep on hating when American hostages are released because of the agreement, that takes a special kind of mendacity.

AshLee Strong, Ryan’s spokeswoman, stood by the use of the word “ransom” Sunday, after Obama confirmed the U.S. would either free or cease attempts to prosecute a spate of people accused of violating sanctions on Iran and separately settled a longstanding Iranian claim over the seizure of funds the country used to purchase American military equipment in the years before the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The most heinous aspect is the lie that we’re “paying” Iran the $100 billion they’re getting. It’s Iranian money that was frozen under the sanctions, not American taxpayer money, but don’t expect crowds at GOP rallies to know that. Expect GOP candidates to keep lying.
