13 inches in front of the Polislice manse at around 1pm Sat. Up to 2 entire feet on the driveway. Glad I got a slightly bigger snow blower than seemed appropriate at the time. Glorious to be out there in it, all things considered.

Damaged Goods Christie Does Drive-By

He’s pretty much just almost literally phoning the governor job in as he looks for a bigger better grift.  Sadly, that bigger better thing is going to be over pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty soon. One can only hope he just completely loses interest in governing at all, but how would we know the difference?

The governor’s drive-through appearance in New Jersey was no aberration. As Mr. Christie, a Republican, pursues a long-shot bid for the presidency, he has nearly vanished from the State Capitol in Trenton.

A review of his activities in New Jersey found that Mr. Christie, who has started past years by proposing grand legislative compromises on issues like public pensions and criminal justice, has called on lawmakers to pass only one specific law in 2016.

Hillary Surrogates Not Helping

Hillary surrogates like Clair McCaskill are supposed to help their candidate. What doesn’t help are Republican attacks on Sanders – by Democrats.

Said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO): “The Republicans won’t touch [Sanders] because they can’t wait to run an ad with a hammer and sickle.

It may well be true that the fact that the word “socialist” has been attached to Sanders may hurt him, may even hurt Democrats down ticket.  It may just as well be true that the 23 years of Hillary hate out there will take the same toll on her and down ticket candidates. To act as if that potential reality, as if the last 23 years of Clinton vilification, whether earned or not, just does not exist, seems fairly silly.

The bottom line here is that Bernie and his surrogates have not lowered themselves to use that while Hillary’s surrogates apparently are quite willing to red bait Bernie. Note, Hillary’s surrogates will. She won’t. Tells you that they know how dirty it is.

Look, I’m agnostic on this. I will support whoever the nominee is. What I’ve said is that Sanders is my long shot dream candidate, closer in both ideology and approach to what I believe we need as a nation than Clinton.  But it’s not like they’re that far apart, it’s more the difference between a big picture ideologue and a small bore technocrat.

And I don’t give a damn if Hillary does lose both Iowa and New Hampshire, it’s still a long way from decided if she does.  These attacks, like Hillary’s teeth grating attempt to tie criticism of her Wall Street fundraising to bad mouthing Obama, seem way too prematurely panicky. These kind of attacks make me want to claw at the TV.

Don’t get nasty.  Or at least don’t get nasty before you have to.  It reminds me of the kind of unhelpful strategy they took in South Carolina in 2008 that caused bitterness among Obama supporters.

The Kiss o’ Sweet Death

Palin endorses Trump and gives Cruz a sad.

“I am greatly honored to receive Sarah’s endorsement,” Mr. Trump said in a statement trumpeting Mrs. Palin’s decision. “She is a friend, and a high-quality person whom I have great respect for. I am proud to have her support.”

If an establishment GOPer is going to make a case against Trump, this has to be their trump card. Pun intended, but immediately regretted.

Solar Keeps Growing in Texas

solarAP76566112903-638x393Haven’t written about this in a while but solar has been continuing to grow while fighting off the efforts by some utilities to tax houses that feed electricity into the grid. Texas has actually been leading on wind and solar despite its oil and gas loving history.

A large utility in TX is now offering a 100% renewable energy plan.

Solar power starts its ascent in Texas

“Solar is poised to take off in Texas,” said Peter Sopher, a policy analyst for the Environmental Defense Fund in Austin.

He compared it to wind power a decade ago, when turbines were popping up in West Texas. In 2005, wind generated 1.4 percent of electricity on ERCOT, the grid that handles most of the state’s electric load. For the first 11 months of 2015, wind’s share was over 11 percent. And in November, it was over 18 percent.

Texas is easily the No. 1 state in wind, with more than twice the capacity of California.

They beat back an effort to end subsidies for panels and now it’s full speed ahead for solar capacity as prices keep going down per megawatt.

Pretty cool.

Kasich Making His Move

Looks like GOPers and GOP leaning independents have chosen their anti-Trump. Latest American Research Group poll has overall:

Likely GOP Primary Voters:
Trump 27% Kasich 20%

The really curious thing is that it’s the older cohort that is late breaking for Kasich.

Likely GOP Primary Voters (50 and over):
Trump 25% Kasich 23%

Likely GOP Primary Voters (49 and under):
Trump 30% Kasich 16%

It may seem counter intuitive to see the older group going more to the center, but these under 50s are the people who have spent their entire political lives with Fox News and rabid talk radio who are carrying Trump.  These people never knew a sane GOP, so don’t know the difference.  Also, predictably, men (oy, men!).

Likely GOP Primary Voters (Male):
Trump 29% Kasich 19%

Likely GOP Primary Voters (Female):
Trump 24% Kasich 22%

This is pretty big actually for the establishment to keep one of theirs in the race with a viable toe hold versus Trump. After Iowa and NH things start to shake out and the other establishment types should be reading the writing on the wall and allowing their fundraisers and followers to coalesce around another.  Presumably it will be be Kasich, based on this.

Unless this poll is an outlier.  In that case nothing to be seen here. Ignore all.

Today in GOP Stupid

Rubio Says He Bought A Gun On Christmas Eve To Help Defend America Against ISIS

No really, he did.

“I’m a strong supporter of the second amendment. I have a right to protect my family if someone were to come after us,” Rubio said on Face the Nation. “In fact, if ISIS were to visit us, or our communities, at any moment, the last line of defense between ISIS and my family is the ability that I have to protect my family from them, or from a criminal, or anyone else who seeks to do us harm. Millions of Americans feel that way.”

Meanwhile Trump said that when he’s president department stores would say “Merry Christmas” instead of the left wing propaganda of “Happy Holidays.” Really he did.

Donald Trump Tells Liberty University ‘the Bible Is the Best’

Trump promised that if American Christians unified behind his candidacy, they would never again suffer the indignity of having a Sears employee wish them “happy holidays.”

“If I’m president, you’re going to see ‘Merry Christmas’ in department stores, believe me,” Trump said.

Hilarious! But not as hilarious as this nugget from Jerry Falwell, Jr. who continues the family business of being professionally holier-than-thou and fulleth-of-shite.

“In my opinion, Mr. Trump lives a life of loving and helping others … as Jesus taught in the New Testament,” Falwell said on Monday.

Victories for Diplomacy Are For The Weak

The demonstrated insanity that came from the opponents of the Iran deal didn’t die when it was passed. It continues now even after its fruits have been borne out in the dismantling of reactors and surrender of fissile materials. Of course, those are news items that aren’t going to get front pages, so easy to be ignorant of. But to keep on hating when American hostages are released because of the agreement, that takes a special kind of mendacity.

AshLee Strong, Ryan’s spokeswoman, stood by the use of the word “ransom” Sunday, after Obama confirmed the U.S. would either free or cease attempts to prosecute a spate of people accused of violating sanctions on Iran and separately settled a longstanding Iranian claim over the seizure of funds the country used to purchase American military equipment in the years before the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The most heinous aspect is the lie that we’re “paying” Iran the $100 billion they’re getting. It’s Iranian money that was frozen under the sanctions, not American taxpayer money, but don’t expect crowds at GOP rallies to know that. Expect GOP candidates to keep lying.
