This is Much, Much Worse Than Watergate

James Clapper: “Watergate pales really, in my view, compared to what we’re confronting now.”

The biggest difference between then and now is that the lawless President is aided today by a hopelessly partisan and calculating Republican party, buoyed by a conservative media that is nothing less than a propaganda arm of the GOP.  In 1974, by the time it was clear that Nixon had obstructed justice and was leading a stonewalling of the investigation, a good number of Republicans, not all mind you, but a good number, had turned on him and stood up for the Constitution and the nation.

There’s no evidence of any stampede of today’s Republicans, or their media outlets to real patriotism and fairmindedness.

Our norms are under assault from outside by the Russians and from the inside from the Republicans.

Vox’s Matthew Yglesias puts it this way:

“Republicans know something is wrong, but they don’t care”
